Damon Kowarsky studied at the Victorian College of the Arts, RMIT and Glasgow School of Art. Since graduating in 2000, exploring different cities and cultures has been an important part of his work.
The prints in Around were made in response to visits to New York and Chicago, cities in Egypt and Pakistan, and Kowarsky's home town of Melbourne, Australia. These etchings demonstrate the universal qualities that bind the places together, as well as the distinct characteristics that make each city unique.
In addition to art, Kowarsky has worked as an archaeological and scientific illustrator. He has taught drawing and printmaking in Lahore and Karachi and taken part in a dig with the Dakhleh Oasis Project in the western deserts of Egypt.
In 2011 he exhibited with the Japanese artist Kyoko Imazu at Aesop Aoyama in Tokyo. This is his first solo exhibition in New York. It follows from participation in the group shows 'Invisible Cities' [2010] and 'Reprise' [2011], both at Aicon Gallery, New York.
around was made possible through the generous support of the Australian Consulate General New York, Aicon Gallery, and Aesop USA.
